It was announced in mid-2023, and google sent out numerous emails to account holders over the last six months. https://support.google.com/domains/answer/13689670?hl=en

Feel free to migrate your domains somewhere else. I chose CloudFlare

The Squarespace acquisition of Google domains was announced, yes.

I don't recall seeing anything about Squarespace immediately going private and being beholden to an investment firm showing up in those emails.

Thanks for the permission, that's exactly what I and I'm sure many others are about to do. Too bad the timing of this announcement is days after the migration from Google to Squarepspace, so I'm not actually allowed to migrate my domain for 60 days :)

Oh wow, did they actually do this as a registrar transfer (rather than by Squarespace stepping in as Google Domains' sucessor)?

It was temporarily the latter, as far as I was aware - I got out as soon as they announced it and migrated to CF. But yea basically, and it's going about as well as you'd expect it to.

Many domains didn't actually transfer to squarespace until very recently. Mine all finished transferring last week (it's probably a coincidence though)

Don't forget the sharing of portco data which leads to you getting targeted offers from all of the other Permira companies like McAfee, Ancestry.com, Klarna, and FlixBus

I feel terrible and I’m transferring everything elsewhere immediately.

where to?

Cloudflare for the domains that it supports.

Do you have a list? I can't find the list of TLDs they support.
