And only Windows and MacOSX support, unlike dropbox's: Windows, MacOSX, Linux, iOS, Android and Blackberry.

The reason Dropbox will continue to prevail over these offerings is its ubiquity. iCloud? Mac only? Ha! Useless to me. This? No Linux or Android support? Still useless to me. Not worth another second thinking about.

Not to deride Cubby too hard, I'm sure it's another neat thing, but I get tired of people thinking any of these things have a shot at dethroning Dropbox. They put a lot of work into being as cross platform as they are (I presume (since no one else has matched it)) and they deserve their top spot.

Anything that doesn't require you to submit to centralized storage under third party control (euphemistically known as "the cloud") has a shot at dethroning Dropbox.

Especially outside the US, where people, governments and businesses are becoming increasingly weary of having their data stored where US government agencies can get access with little to no legal process.

When companies start using "not stored in the US" as a selling point for their services you have a serious problem.

fair enough to some extent. However since I can't run the software at home, at work, or on my phone, it's still not even on my radar so my point retains some of its validity :)

If you aren't adverse to rolling your own solution, do what I do - a really cheap UK hosted VPS + rsync.

I can get at it from my phone or desktop and it costs next to nothing.

I frankly don't know a single person outside the US who's worried about things being "stored in the US" (nor see the majority of people caring at all about where "in the cloud" is their stuff). But I guess that's just my gut feeling vs yours, in this case..

You'll find, for example, the Australian National Privacy Principles forbid hosting Personal data offshore unless you get the permission of that person first. That's a bit unwieldy for most companies.

There are other conditions, but letting people's data be subject to the US Patriot act is one of the underlying concerns.

Modify Tortoise SVN to behave like a Dropbox client.

Now anyone can manage their own servers, and have several directories/folders synchronized.

Problem solved

Cubby does appear to have an iOS(http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cubby-app/id512952416?mt=8 ) and Android(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.logmein.cu... ) client.

Why all the lime green?!

Supporting various platforms takes time but it's not that difficult. It's just milestones on a long roadmap that takes time and resources. In the long-term, products compete on many different grounds but cross-platform support is rarely the key.

Last I checked Dropbox's android support was just an app version of the website with no syncing. That barely counts. The desktop/server linux support is pretty good though.

That is a feature. You don't want your mobile device frivolously syncing every single file that gets changed. Most don't even have the capacity to hold all your Dropbox quota.

Selective sync picks folders. Obviously I would be able to set it to wifi only. Or maybe someone could spend a day adding hourly sync instead of continuous.

In short, a lack of the core feature is definitely not a feature.
