EVs need to be purchased because of demand for lower cost of travel and better vehicle options. I don't think that's happening. In CA we're on a death spiral towards forcing everyone to buy EVs after a certain date. I don't know if vehicle manufacturers, gas stations and the trucking industry can meet it, but legislators want to hand-wave all of it away.
Is forcing everyone to buy a new ev really good for the planet? I would think people keeping and repair existing vehicles would be better for the planet than mining, transporting, refining, building, transporting again a brand new car.
Nobody will be forced to buy EVs; the California law does not prevent people from continuing to use their existing vehicles, nor from reselling them. It will simply become illegal to sell new fossil fuel vehicles in the state after 2035.
"simply" that's too far. Let the market handle it
The market will handle it, within the new constraint that damaging the environment and putting one's fellow citizens at risk by pumping out fossil-fuel exhaust will be considered decreasingly acceptable behavior.
