The CEO has been fired since then.
The CEO was the token the board fired to make it look like they had learned a lesson.
Incompetence is the most likely explanation.
Most of the good people have left Unity or have been laid off. Whoever remain are likely ill equipped to deal with anything. So I see these kinds of decisions as the death throes of the company.
If you see them release their own video add-on in the next few months then there's the reason.
