Would you need as much shielding in an unmanned craft?

Probably unless you want the entire thing to end up unmaintainable/untouchable by anything other than a hardened robot.

Radiation induced bitflips in the avionics could be a problem too, I imagine. Suddenly up is down and it nose dives!
