I’ve often wondered if writing on a CD/DVD with a Sharpie had an effect on the reflective layer, as I remember back in the day there were special markers for writing on these disks. Like the author though, I have perfectly serviceable optical media in some cases over 20 years old so perhaps those pens were just another attempt to sell me something I didn’t know I didn’t need!
