If you have a park and a grocery store both on the same path, and sidewalks, i'd argue that your neighborhood is already walkable.

If you want to take advantage of a walkable neighborhood, then you shouldn't be complaining about a mile. A mile is nothing. Before WFH I was walking two miles to work and two miles back every day, and that doesn't count all the other places I walked to every day (another one or two miles for lunch, and another one or two miles in the evening.) And I still managed to gain weight with that routine.. Somebody complaining about one mile sounds like a joke. If you actually want a walkable neighborhood, you should be prepared to walk.
