This kind of defeatist attitude doesn't contribute to a better future.
There is no “but we are making progress” to a species that is extinct.
We're still continuing to fuck things up and that should be called out.
Likewise we should celebrate and support the progress we've made, and not surrender to defeatism.
just one more rapid environmental change faster than evolution can adapt to that will likely result in extinction.
You’re fooling yourself homie.
the researchers say the dramatic increase in population led to competition for food that resulted in the crabs starving to death because there wasn't enough food for everybody.
from NOAA website
The current Gulf of Mexico marine heat wave has been present for several months, beginning in February/March of 2023. NOAA’s experimental marine heat wave forecasts indicate a 70-100% chance that extreme ocean temperatures will persist in the southern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. [...] The ocean absorbs 90% of the excess heat associated with global warming. As a result, we know that marine heat waves all over the planet are becoming warmer over time. The absolute temperature of the current event is warmer because of climate change, but it would have likely still occurred without climate change
Currently, nearly 50% of the global oceans meet the criteria for a marine heat wave, periods of anomalously warm ocean temperatures that are higher than 90% of the previous observations for a particular date
they are now more frequent because of climate change, but they were common in the past too. common as in "not in any way special, strange, or unusual"
"Present for several months" is common too for marine heat waves, they cover very large surfaces so they can persist for weeks to months or even years, and occur at subsurface levels
the rate of ocean warming has doubled, and marine heatwave events have doubled in frequency since 1982
it seems to me that marine heatwaves were heard of before 2010...
the current marine heat wave in the Gulf of Mexico is mostly caused by El Niño, which is not a human made phenomenon.
> They are anomalous ergo they are special
No they aren't, just like hurricanes, they are anomalies compared to good everyday weather for humans but they aren't special, they are common phenomena.
Common on a planetary scale can mean that two events are separated by thousands or millions of years.
For example: ice ages or mass extinction events are common on planet Earth. Given enough time, they will happen.
> There isn’t a “history of warming”
there actually is. We simply weren't there and can only somewhat infer what happened.
Ocean temperatures today are about the same as they were more than 100,000 years ago
I'm not saying global warming is not happening and that it's not human made, I'm simply saying that there have been periods during the 4.543 billion years of existence of this Planet where oceans have been as warm or warmer than now. They were full of life as well, a life different from the one we know now, but life nonetheless.
4.543 billion years means that there have been 44,533 100,000 years ago
how many 10 years ago is that?
