Not sure how 256x256 is going to make potential customers happy.

Working on more, but nothing exists off-the-shelf for >300ppi eink. No one has ever done eink under magnification like this so higher density screens don't exist (yet). We made a custom bitmap font system and font to squeeze every bit of optimization out of this screen that we can. Yeah, at this res and price, they shouldn't be showing you a page. They should be eye tracking and showing you the a line or two of text at a time so that it's much cleaner.

Eye tracking requires a very high refresh rate, and this is an e-ink display which have very, very slow refresh rates.

It's like reading in Minecraft.

Or reading on an old iPod!

HN renders nice on my friend's old ipod.

For the most advanced e-ink display, it offers 300 ppi.

I don't think this kind of resolution is sufficient for VR.

I know e-ink is expensive. But two tiny screens aren't THAT expensive. Someone will probably a have version of this on Hack A Day made from spares.

I have actually made a pi powered eReader with a 2.7 inch eink screen with Python. I could pretty easily swap the code over to work with the 1.3 inch screens they use here.

This kind of interaction is what I love about HN! :D

The only particularly cutting edge tech on this thing are the custom pancake lenses. Same optics style as in the Vision Pro and Quest 3. Those are $$$

$350 to preorder THIS?

For that price i would expect it to load all my books into a VR world simulating a quiet study room in mansion.

The new oculus meta quest 3 could do this and the price difference while nearly double isn't huge if someone really as 350 spare to spend on this.

And the oculus would have headphones, this doens't?
