My boss, on my first job, whenever presented with any alarmist "study" of this nature would mumble:

"If you feed a rat a boxcar of anything, it'll get cancer".

And the point these studies are trying to make is that, we are taking a boxcar of sugar everyday.

I think this is the key. In the amounts that people are consuming it today, sugar is a toxin.
