This thief was caught though.

There may be no security on the bluetooth, but there were cameras and accountants who noticed a discrepancy in the sales figures.

In a way, it's better to have 'system level security' (ie. auditors and CCTV) than to secure just the fuel pump - after all, another thief might be around the back lowering his own pump into the big storage tanks, bypassing the bluetooth entirely...

And that's apparently very common. According to the podcast I linked to in another comment, the deliveries are often done when no one is around, so the hatches to the tanks are often left unlocked overnight.

Maybe it's a Georgia thing, but I always see the ports for filling the tanks in front near the pumps in clear view of people inside the store. I think an attendant would notice someone with a pump where the fuel trucks usually park.

I wonder how much fuel a white hard hat, safety vest, and clipboard could net one with a service truck/van.
