For me the solution was to download Wireguard configs and use the Wireguard app.

But is the Wireguard app leaking data and just less secure than Mullvad's app?

This is only a solution if you don't set PostUp and PostDown firewall rules in your WireGuard config. Which isn't much of a solution.
