Reaction: Old, old news. My father grew up long before antibiotics were a thing. (Producing penicillin, at scale, was a late-WWII development.) Back then, it was very well known that "minor" deep puncture wounds (from fangs, nails, or whatever) could prove fatal within days, due to bacterial infection. One my earliest memories of dad is of him telling me about another boy he knew, who died that way, and of how the boy's symptoms progressed. Obvious-in-hindsight moral lesson: "Son, if you get bit by something, or poked by a nail, or whatever - then you tell your parents immediately, so we can get you to the doctor. Embarrassment over how stupid you were, or covering up your rule-breaking, or emotional reasons like that - those won't keep you from dying like my friend died..."
