I'm not sure HP have a monopoly on douchebaggery, but they might have the majority share.
I gave my pos hp printer to my son: he likes to learn about tech.
After 2 months he threw it away and got a deal with a local shop for printing online to them.
He'd learnt enough.
And i use the dame printing service, and have recommended it to several others.

Guessing it's whatever the smash rooms find easily available at the local thrift stores. Perhaps HPs get tossed out the most though for reasons you mention.
