Or if you're not western - washing your hands every time you use the restroom.
It's all about perspective.
Not really. I can enforce my own standards, but it doesn't mean everyone will enforce them on their own. This is relevant when sharing food, for instance.
Oh and one other major point. when eating with hands you should ALWAYS wash your hands either just before you sit at the table or at the table.
