Ask HN: What one piece of music should everyone listen to?

8 pointskypro20 comments

I enjoy listening to new and interesting music, but it can be hard to find stuff that's unique.

Is there one song or one piece of music you think everyone should listen to because of how interesting / unique it is? I'm not necessarily looking for "good", but stuff that's just interesting or different in some way.

It doesn't need to be obscure, but by definition I'm not looking for anything too mainstream.

I'm awful at this, but I suppose off the top of my head, Daniel Johnston's music is quite interesting if you've not listened to it before, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMPTDOXxttg

He's fairly well known, but I love everything Jonny Greenwood does and he makes some really interesting stuff, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9Sj5Ud-vZA

Edit: As you can see, I'm hilariously bad at "one". But if you're searching for interesting music, you find some at every turn :)

Tomek Kolczynski's OST for "Feist". I especially like "Playing with Fire".

For its gimmick: Rameau: Le rappel des oiseaux ("Call of the Birds")

https://youtu.be/IBRRRBG6Nzk

Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition. Especially: Gnomus, Ballet of the Chicks in their Shells, Baba Yaga

https://youtu.be/A1C1NiGWccA https://youtu.be/_HPtSftZ3b0 https://youtu.be/ISoSVmXXJuc

Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf, for similar reasons: https://youtu.be/oZ5WMZUbKy4

Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring: https://youtu.be/rP42C-4zL3w

Edit: Oh, and Kenji Kawai's OST for Ghost in the Shell. Especially "Chant I".

Edit 2: And Dave Greenslade & Patrick Woodroffe: The Pentateuch of the Cosmogony

I would suggest the music from.

* Aurora Aksnes - she is a Norwegian songwriter and singer. What I like about her music is that it's unique and feels "ethereal" when you listen to it. I can't find something similar in the music industry. She mainly writes songs about human and nature. Even there is a song about "alien". Aurora's Runaway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_HlPboLRL8 is a good introduction to her music.

* Federico Martelli - he is an Italian music producer. I find his music is so relaxing to listen to. Here is the example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXyxpiWJU5M. Enjoy!

Some suggestions:

Hinkstep - Aldrig Mer https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xCk7ZH_fzCY

Nachur - Cicada Sessions (sadly just three tracks ever made as far as I know) https://youtu.be/4z1ygc_nyJY?list=OLAK5uy_kjOlnCToH30pIfVIa2...

and finally - even well known - lend an ear to Kruder & Dorfmeister (most tracks) https://youtu.be/ShWTcxqUqvw

Have fun

It's not a new song at all but 'Portrait of Tracy' by Jaco Pastorius is a beautiful piece for electric bass. It makes heavy use of harmonics which was very unique at the time and is still unique today.

The original “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” remains an enduring classic:

That entire album is golden.

One of the few perfect albums IMHO.

Tigran Hamasyan is a musical genius, and this is the most interesting and memorable piece I've seen/heard over the last couple of years. I still get chills whenever I watch it:

(if interested, I post an eclectic pick like this each day over on counter.social under the tag #codesmusic, and almost never a mainstream piece)

Oh wow - thx for this one!

Thank YOU for the Hinkstep

This specific rendition of Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score": https://youtu.be/47e_961OQWE

I don't really think limiting to one piece of music is really appropriate for an art form that can affect us on so many dimensions but...

The Rite of Spring.

Pat Metheney- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VVRRPUgvu4

Thanks for sharing - this was interesting. I'll need to listen to this with some good headphones when I get the time because there's so much going on.

It reminded me a bit of Bill Wurtz's music in a weird way too,

Arvo Pärt - Fratres for Cello and Piano

https://youtu.be/v4XMjsYeMig

I'd put Eliane Radigue's Trilogie De La Mort on that list. On enough listenings, it changes the way you perceive sound.

Seeing as being good isn't a requirement.

Why not make the music you want to hear?

I try to, but I also like to listen to stuff I have no interest (or ability) to write.

Here's something I've written though: https://www.whyp.it/tracks/67983/0004

And some influences which capture some of the elements I'm going for a bit better:

The first link to Honeysmack?

Just watched his new interview of CJ Bollard last night.

So I dialed up Bollard’s Horsepower while I made my oatmeal this morning. Recommend as something different.

Enjoyed your track. Tthough it doesn’t fit my current playlist it was a great interlude. Thanks.

Did you play all the parts yourself?
