HP has tried to solve this with some of their multifunction printers (I have an 8720) by having their software refuse to scan until you create an online account and register the printer. They really, really, really want you to subscribe to their ink service.

I'd put it back in the box and return it as defective.

It worked just fine when I bought it. The “update” was rolled out well past the date I could return it.

This and the fact that it's likely a not-updated Linux box with a persistent store of things I've printed are reasons why my HP printer is not connected to any network...
