Is it? Maybe we're raising a generation of wimpy states and industries, so cosseted and insulated from the normal bumps and scrapes of playing with others and taking care of themselves that they become petulant, ungrateful and cowardly. And letting them gather to binge on sugar instead of developing a healthy balance between work and reward will surely lead to health problems down the line.
If our states and institutions are to function effectively in the world, they need to develop both strength and empathy, and the largely transient and cosmetic injuries they may incur at the playground are just part of growing up. Agitation and childish misery can be dispelled with brief acknowledgement of the injury and the assurance that the injured part will grow back.
