Seems like it would be difficult to accept for Japanese companies, after all most of their equipment isn't nearly as difficult to copy as ASML.

Also, Tokyo will likely push for concessions in exchange from Washington regarding military basing and other hot button issues.

Leading edge equipment from Tokyo Electron is still very hard to copy, and the Japanese are years ahead of Chinese counterparts.

This is simply not true, at least to me. Chinese tools used to be cheap and bad. But, these days I find them cheap and better than Japanese expensive tools.

Not according to my experiences. Most of my tooling is high end and the company I work for lets us order from brands of our choice, which lead to a fairly broad range of competing products across the workbenches here. I have never seen even once a case where a chinese high end product surpasses or even comes close to its japanese counterpart.

We’re not talking about hand tools here.

I doubt Tokyo will be asking for removal or drawdown of US military bases given the current situation in the South China Sea.

Tokyo doesn't need to push for any military basing concessions. They have full control over where the US military is allowed.

The contentious bit is that local authorities don't have control over this and are overridden by Tokyo. But that's an internal matter.
