Yes, they are not coal miners but they are not rich by any stretch.
(Also I’ve been in this situation, years ago, making SV money having projects suddenly canceled. It fuckin destroys morale, and despite what everyone says in this thread, despite the high cost of living, an entry level or a step or two up engineer salary at google will mean you pay off your loans and start building cash reserve very very quickly, never mind the stock grants, so you can just quit. And should, rather than linger around in a restructured team where everyone is kinda pissed.)
If the decision is not final, why distract the workers who would now have a what-its-worth-if-it-maybe-ends thinking?
And at the moment the decision is made the opposite, it doesn't make sense to let anyone keep working on it, so it is abrupt and surprising for most?
Also, what is bad about it, sure it is a bit frustrating to trash work, but sometimes things change... for me, this never resulted in layoffs but there is always enough work for skilled people and they move to other projects in need (most times being the main reason for such decisions). Not at google?
This article is telling us that Stadia employees were given a 3+ month heads up that their division would close in January. Instead of letting that news leak in a way that Google couldn't control, it decided to make a press release after informing their workers.
That's very humane in my book
