Words sometimes having two meanings has been alluded to in the literature as early as 1971.

Am I missing a joke here or something? Surely people knew about homonyms prior to 1971

Which is itself a name collision with an earlier Neil Sedaka song.

This page makes no reference to any synonyms. Can you explain?

Lyrics:

And she's buying a stairway to heaven There's a sign on the wall But she wants to be sure 'Cause you know, sometimes words have two meanings

The lyrics of the song include: “sometimes words have two meanings”

We knew about them, but we didn't talk about it.

I think we had metaphors before that?
