It's almost like some constant of retail appliances. You pay now, or you pay later. And you might pay both.
The problem is that not only is the longevity hard to assess from reputation any more, it's that replacement parts and labor are so problematic as well.
I (and others I know) have had a simple washing machine circuit panel burn out because of simple overloaded pumps, etc. (or you might experience this with a dishwasher, refrigerator, etc). Just to get the part is now several $100s, and another $150+ for any kind of labor visit.
I am rapidly thinking that home warranties where they cover a certain set of your appliances is starting to be worth it.
