As a long time Linux and BSD user I agree with you. You still have to enable basic things that are not turned on by default - i.e. stack protection. A lot of this is enabled by default on OpenBSD.
he seems to be obsessed with an os he doesn't use.
Don't know what keeps him going. A desire to see FreeBSD fix those defaults? Desire for OpenBSD to be recognised as having better defaults for security than FreeBSD? What would that even look like?
And when they do fix any of those things, what is his reaction going to be? So far it's been "it took them so much time to fix this, let's keep that in mind".
The point of it is clearly to convince people to use OpenBSD instead of FreeBSD.
