Google was the only employer I had where I had root on my machine, so I would say that developers have control over their machine.

I had root on my Linux desktop box at my university job, but I was in IT, administering a Linux service. Most of my coworkers were using Macs only.

Was this pre or post 2009?

I have root on my Google machine right this second.

I have root right now on my Linux and MacOS systems.

Post.
