TLDR: It's most likely non-viral and unrelated to alcohol or environmental factors. Can't be Covid-Vaccination related because the kids are too young. Most likely candidate is Ad41 which was found in half of the kids.

How does a virus cause non-viral hepatitis?

As per the article, non-viral hepatitis is cause by things others than viruses.

The paper uses "viral hepatitis" to refer to Hepatitis caused by one of the Hepatovirus species, which are also commonly called "Hepatitis A Virus" to "Hepatitis E Virus"

So that sounds like there are characteristics of the etiology of viral-hep as opposed to non-viral which don't appear in this case of hepncaused by a virus? I'm not very familiar with the subject

Not the kids, but were the parents vaccinated or spend too much time with vaccinated persons?

The covid vaccinations are not live and so there is no "shedding" if this is your avenue of exploration

This is what I'm talking about. Not persuaded though that "shedding" does not happen.

This describes antibody transfer, which would be the case vaccinated or not.

You should maybe consider spending more time with people, any people.
