We're becoming more and more like the Adeptus Mechanicus from Warhammer 40k. The secrets of the technology we are using lost to time, using "prayers" in the hopes one sticks.
Reminds me of this talk by Johnathan Blow that I have come to appreciate[1]. Perhaps I am an odd case, but I seem to be stumbling onto bugs very frequently.
I've thought this as well. Trade "compliance" and "industry best practices" for "tech heresy" and boom, we're well on our way. At least at certain shops anyway.
Or the Zentraedi from Macross, who knew how to operate but not how to maintain their battleships, mechs, and other equipment (purposely done so they would maintain loyal battle-thralls to the Protoculture).
