It's the general trend of paternalism, and I find it deeply irritating too.

Your irritation at something trivial vs the hours spent recovering from and defending from attacks is a balance I’m ok with.

"Let's irritate everyone by denying them making their own choices so we can be protected from the mistakes of stupid people" is pretty much the definition of paternalism.

No one is stopping you from making your own choices. In fact, by not giving you a default password, they're making one less choice on your behalf.

thats an incredibly strange take, like that is literally the complete opposite of what is happening

Judging from the comments here, and the law passing, not only is everyone not annoyed, you are in the minority.
