the amount of youtube I watch minimized is really amazing. If they had an audio only option that I could listen to while I run I would actually consume more of their content...you could even feed me audio specific ads.
also if you tap "background" it will stop the video stream but keep playing the audio, but im not 100% sure does it just pause the video on screen but keeps downloading it, or whether it actually switches to an audio only stream.
