https://lowendbox.com/But yes I agree, the top post is like reading a transmission from a distant galaxy. I pay for a few cloud machines, consumer VPN, Internet uplink, and electricity. Outsourcing services you rely upon creates all the wrong incentives.
Hardware costs money, especially when you get obsessive about it (. o O 2TB SSDs are getting cheap, maybe I'll add some to my backups). But the cost is fully accrued at time of purchase and the ongoing relationship is straightforward. There's no slow creep up in monthly spend, price increases, or trying to cut back ongoing services that you can't imagine living without (would you rather watch TV xor listen to music next month? lol)
And ultimately it's not even about money. Every time I read some HN outrage thread about some centralized service acting against their users, I wonder why people put up with it. Digital privacy/autonomy FTFW.
