This is a lot like the modern jousters teasing medievalists. It's simply not the relevant skill.

A difference is, this person seemed pretty knowledgable (for an amateur? Not that I could properly judge) so it was much more enjoyable read than most of these sorts of things.

What I got from it is that Mary Bears assumes or implies that everyone has this struggle.

She made her comments in an article specifically about what it's like to be a Classics 'Don'.

And judging from the quotes, she caveated that some people do actively overcome this struggle.
