A note on negotiating: If you're rebuffed now, don't stop there. Flat out ask what you need to deliver on to be considered for a raise or promotion in 6-12 months.

Generally you'll get the most impact from negotiating at time of hiring, but it's definitely worth a shot. Even if they don't go for it or you don't get much of a bump, its good practice.
