I always found it interesting that squirrels, rabbits, and raccoons in my yard avoid eating the tomato’s. You’d think it would be an easy snack.
There might be traces of nicotine in the plant, which is a pesticide.
This actually also might give some fuel as to why people considered it dangerous.
EDIT after googling: Yes tomato contains nicotine, in particular before ripening.
Where I live there are poisonous berries that can be mistaken with cherry tomatoes.
