I was wondering how Apple would handle their imminent iPhone 13 announcement event in light of the public outcry over the photo scanning. Now we know the answer, they will pretend to listen until everyone buys a new shiny, and then quietly slip in the changes without making much noise after everyone forgets about them.

It may be easy to hide that as part of an update, after mainstream focus settles down. It could be part of "Various privacy improvements" changelog line and it may not be easily noticable. And if some security researcher discovers it many years later, they will say "we told everyone in 2021 we cared about children and that we would implement this".
