I just can't understand why the Japanese companies manage to create these amazing devices with absolutely niche pricing and subpar software.

It seems like Chinese companies figured out a while back that they need to make their software at least seem good if they want to capture the global market. Obviously the price is an even bigger aspect of the equation.
