Related to this article, I work at Shopify and they have 3 rules which are loosely as follows:
1) Build a great product
2) Make money
3) 1 always comes before 2

In all large companies at one point the stars aligned and you had smart, connected devs and sales people that made a great product, executed and sold. This fades after a while, you get academics and newbies that derail and complicated a good thing.
I have seen it over and over again. Hulu is a good example, started out very strong and slowly became a terrible product. Til this I dont understand the UI.
