2023: Why you should NOT use Flutter

Don't know much about nativescript, but picked up flutter 3 weeks back and am almost finished writing my first flutter app just coding during my free time. Feels great coding in it and seems well thought out. Just my 2 cents

I've heard great things about Flutter, and Flutter 2 sounds very interesting. However, I don't trust Google not to get bored and change directions, and so I won't invest my time until Flutter is strategically important to their business.

I had this conversation with a support engineer for Google Cloud one time. I mentioned that Google has a long history of dumping products that people rely on and he got really annoyed, as if that wasn't true. I don't know if they fully appreciate that they have a reputation for this.

Hard to want to believe something if it means nobody will care about your work no matter how good it is for reasons out of your control.

That's a good call, although if it becomes widely used outside of google, won't it be possible for a community to just fork it when google loses interest?

You mean like AngularJS (which is an entirely different framework then modern angular)

Hahaha, that was before my time, so no idea. But I was just guessing based on flutter being open source. Guess taking over a huge codebase from an entirely different team who was being paid for it full time isn't feasible even in the slightest?

After been bitten by Google’s “graveware” one time to many I don’t invest heavily into their ecosystems anymore. And in my experience the projects are either abandoned or fizzling into obscurity once Google pulls the plug even if an open source community could technically fork it and take over. But in reality usually people rather go on the next shiny thing instead.

I don't know enough about NativeScript to comment but Flutter is a great platform, I'd pick it up over native any day.

The proof is in the pudding and the Flutter pudding is pretty tasty from everything I've been reading. Not just for toys but for a vast number of launched applications written using that platform.

Now do 2025 :D

2025: Why you should NOT use Kotlin

It’s been two years since our company decided we’ll pick Kotlin to create and maintain our Android App. This was the third-biggest mistake our now nearly-defunct company made in the last 8 years. We are about to rebuild our Android app in Java from scratch now…

Well, as the ancient legend goes: Over 3 Billion devices do run Java

The kicker is that all the different iterations of the code ran just fine, the problem was that the product was shit all along.

“We didn’t touch the app for a year and after we upgraded to Gradle 13, everything went to hell”?

The hip, shiny framework/project that everyone is going to jump to in 2025 has yet to be written.
