Probably worth noting that were this to take off it would probably also be embedded in every TV out there.

If it's infrared, you can always find and cover the emitter.

It would be more difficult if the emitter were inside the bezel.

Good point. In your home yes, but not everywhere.

In which case you could cover the receiver on the phone instead.

stick an IR filter on the back of your phone, no?

Or add IR blocking film.
