How/can we (the users who like old.) help?

Presumably the best thing you can do is use it, to boost the metrics, and click through more adverts you see. Make it valuable for them

Seriously... like, do they want to consider open up some of the support for that UI to external contributions?

It _was_ open source, though they stopped updating the open source version a few years ago.
