I use SCP all the time to transfer files to a VPS. I do not understand this trend of deprecating things that are working (X.org, SCP) with inferior alternatives (wayland, ssh cat etc).
By "deprecate" the article actually means "replace with a wrapper around sftp that has the same basic command line interface as the current scp". Since sftp works just fine but has a lousy command line interface (as the article notes), this would not be an example of the trend you describe.
You didn't read the article, just the title, did you?
The title is kind of inaccurate in describing what's in the article.
