He has no way of knowing if where he got them from was hired by Russia.

Ye that is correct.

So Russia, aswell as any of every other organization, state or individual on the planet, might indirectly have handed the info over.

if only there were some investigations into the source of the hack. i guess we'll never know

That's wrong and misleading. He might, for instance, have scooped them right off of Hillary's server.

Or he might have gotten them directly from someone working at the DNC
