Insofar as other efforts, there was wiretapping in Berlin ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gold ), undersea cable tapping ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ivy_Bells ), the Gamma Gupy monitoring of Soviet leaders car phones etc.
