Anecdata, but I've put in a high end oven, dishwasher, new shower head, bike rack and more ceiling lights in our rental. The appliances we're cheap as they were second hand, and our deposit is also 1/2 of our monthly rent, so I plan on leaving it all there and I don't really care if we lose the deposit. But it was well worth it for the comfort of the place (I cook a lot). And it's a better place for whoever's next. The landlord hasn't upped the rent in 3 years, so I think we've both got a good deal out of it.
