on-call is standard industry practice, there's nothing especially egregious about this. the difference is that some places like google pay extra for it.
Maybe we shouldn't allow companies to require on call without extra compensation?
What? Not without extra pay, that's for damn sure...not just "some" companies. That's ridiculous. I got overtime when I worked retail for crying out loud...
