I didn't know that about the French keyboard. The Japanese keyboard is mostly a mess because they have to shove a bunch of extra characters into the same physical space, but the one thing I miss is that they have @ as an unshifted character. It's very convenient for that. I'd gladly trade away unshifted ` for unshifted @.
