Also, the visibility is somewhat more limited in India on the basis that much of the most vulnerable population wouldn't access the healthcare system anyway and the symptoms wouldn't especially stand out in a country where regular pneumonia kills a child every couple of minutes.

If there are a significant number of deaths in India, it will not go unnoticed; whether they happen in slums or elsewhere. India has chaotic but functional healthcare reporting and oversight, and they're actively tracking the epidemic with whatever means they have at their disposal.

In short, infections may well go unnoticed because of limited testing. But deaths will be recorded.

This cannot happen. EVERYONE in the country is aware of the situation and the slum dwellers would themselves call out anyone who shows symptoms (well before the person died).

Having said that, we do have incidents of groups who hide/protect people who are potentially infected. There are ongoing efforts to persuade communities (especially in identified hotspots) to come for testing and tracking but then these are the challenges of a large and diverse country.

In which case there would be quarantined areas. Haven't read anything in the news. I don't live in India, but I don't think that in an interconnected world something like that would go unnoticed.
