In my mind, the minute locked bootloaders became the norm for android, and firmware source files became unavailable for devs, android became a closed-shut system. There used to be an entire ecosystem of mods and custom roms, which now have mostly dried up. The number of hoops needed to jump through to actually make an android phone your own in 2020 is completely absurd.
