Could be an implementation over Weightless-N which is open source, sub-GHz and works on the ranges this is supposed to work. http://www.weightless.org/
It has to be related to zigbee, zwave or LoRA, I don't think Amazon would be silly enough to reinvent the wheel. Probably one of the above with its own custom software stack on the tiny computer running it.
It's the same market and in the same band so, yes.
