I wonder about the potential of fusing subsymbolic with symbolic systems, continually learning and updating a set of feature vectors to serve as a dictionary, translating between the subsymbolic and symbolic parts of an integrated learning framework. I think of that as analoguous to how the older, more intuitive parts of the brain and the language-based, reflective, linear, reasoning parts work together.
