The technology team that makes implementation decisions for the slate.com website is likely in an entirely different department than the journalists who write articles for it. It's kinda a cheap shot to mock the journalists for decisions they didn't even make.
What I do remember is that "Slate" journalists wrote it. And its on that platform - which is using the very privacy destroying tactics they bemoan about FB. And they also pull data from FB with people using their SSO.
They made themselves as hypocrites. Nobody forced them to 'force agree' people, or to tie in to FB or goog. But they absolutely did.
