If at 37 you consider yourself "older programmer", the industry is fucked. The minimum social security retirement age in US is 62. That is older programmer. Full retirement age is 66.
"Why is that old guy still working? Must not have worked hard enough like I do! I'll be retired at 45 from my stock options and 401k" e.g. extrapolating from last 5-10 years of stock returns, which is all they've known...
